In September 1990 the 4th Meeting of the International Academy of Periodontology brought scientists and dentists from around the world to Istanbul. The Vice President of the United States, Dan Quayle, sent the meeting a letter addressed to Prof. Dr. Peker Sandallı, then Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at Istanbul University.
The letter is dated 7 September 1990 and written on the Vice President's letterhead. It calls the gathering a fine example of what international cooperation achieves, and says that the efforts to bring dental care and disease prevention to every corner of the world are greatly appreciated.
