Digital smile design

Digital smile design uses facial photos and digital imaging to plan cosmetic dental work before treatment starts, so the patient can see the proposed changes first.

In short

  • 01Digital imaging firstPhotos and 3D modelling capture your face and teeth before any treatment is planned.
  • 02Golden proportionsTooth size and position are planned using proportions associated with a balanced smile.
  • 03You see it firstDigital mock-ups let you review the design and give feedback before treatment starts.

Digital smile design (DSD) plans cosmetic dental treatment using digital imaging, so you can see and discuss the proposed changes before any work begins.

Principles of digital smile design

DSD considers your facial features, lip dynamics and personal preferences to build a customised plan. The dentist analyses facial proportions, symmetry and harmony to design a smile that suits your overall appearance, applying golden proportions, a set of ratios associated with balance in art and nature, to the size and position of the teeth.

What can digital smile design include

The plan can combine one or more procedures depending on what the case needs:

  • Teeth whitening: often the starting point for a brighter smile.
  • Porcelain veneers: thin, custom-made shells that cover imperfections in individual teeth.
  • Dental implants: for a single missing tooth or a full arch.
  • Orthodontic treatment: for alignment issues.
  • Composite fillings: a natural-looking way to treat cavities.
  • Closing tooth gaps: for gaps between teeth.
  • Gum contouring: for a gummy smile.

How is digital smile design performed

The process starts with digital images of your face, smile and teeth, captured with imaging technology that produces an accurate picture of your teeth, gums and facial structure. The dentist uses specialised software to analyse these images and build a customised design, including a virtual simulation and digital blueprint, and can adjust the design in real time as it’s discussed with you.

You take an active part in this stage: the digital mock-ups and simulations are shared with you so you can give feedback before anything is finalised. Once you approve the design, a treatment plan is drawn up, which may combine procedures such as whitening, veneers, implants or orthodontic treatment. The dentist then carries out the agreed procedures following the digital design.

With any surgical or interventional procedure, results can vary from person to person.

Frequently asked questions

Is digital smile design suitable for everyone?

DSD suits a wide range of people seeking smile changes, whether the concern is cosmetic, restoring damaged teeth, or improving alignment. A consultation with a DSD-trained dentist can confirm whether it suits your case.

How long does the digital smile design process take?

This depends on the complexity of the case and which procedures are combined. Initial assessment and digital imaging usually take one or two appointments; the overall timeline is set during consultation and treatment planning.

How are digital smile design results maintained?

Good oral hygiene, avoiding staining foods and drinks, and regular dental check-ups help maintain the result. Your dentist may also suggest protective measures, such as a night guard, or periodic maintenance such as a whitening touch-up.
